daily diminishing (day 31)

I read this book about four years ago and have kept it because it represents a way of life that I have longed for. My grandfather and I had many discussions around this book and the lifestyle that it describes and promotes.

  1. I’ve just finished reading this book. The Nearings lived on Cape Rosier which is not far from our place on Deer Isle. It’s the life that Jack and I imagined we could live long ago. It was a fantasy.
A book was recently written by a woman who lived with the Nearings for a period of time…an expose, really. The Good Life apparently wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

  2. I’ve been to the farm nearby (http://www.fourseasonfarm.com/) that was either part of the Nearing property or adjacent and Barbara and Eliot are trying to continue the good life and doing a grand job. The growing season in Maine is made of precious few days, but they have managed to extend the season, grow things that normally don’t make it and rotate crops by moving their greenhouses on sleds to promote early warmth and growth. They are a true inspiration to all small growers. Worth a visit.
