daily diminishing (day 161)

This is Amy Vanderbilt’s Complete Book of Etiquette published in 1954, including all manner of curious “rules” of behavior for social situations, such as: sharing a hospital room. I bought this because it was interesting to me to study how social rules and roles have changed since 1954 and, in some ways, how they’ve remained the same. There are entire chapters devoted to: The Ritual of Drinking, Gracious Living Without Servants, and An Audience with the Pope.
